1960s Talk by Mr Francis

On Monday 9th February Mr Francis, our local historian, came into school to discuss aspects of life in the 1960s. He began by talking about the fashion of the time e.g the mini skirts. He talked about people like Mary Quant.

Mr Francis then talked about other icons of the era, such as The Beatles, Cilla Black, Richard Burrton and Anthony Hopkins.

We then went on to find out about the assassinations of J.F. Kennedy, the President of America and Martin Luther King and how these events shaped the future for all people. 

So what happened in Llanharry in the 1960s? The Workingmen's Club was opened in the 60s. A pint of beer would have cost 5 1/2d!!

The village would have day trips to Barry Island too. One year, 700 people went and they needed 17 buses to take them! 

At one point in the decade, nearly 400 pupils attended our school!!! Some of the shops were opened in the village during the 60s.  

Ysgol Llanhari first opened in 1960. It was initially called Llanhari County Secondary School but became a Welsh School in 1975.
